Join in –project increases the public authorities` commitment to the non-discrimination policy

Join In- project is one of the 25 European projects, which are co-funded by European Commission’s Community Action Programme to combat discrimination in 2004-2006. The project's main objective is to include non-discrimination perspective into the daily practices of public officials´ work.  It develops co-operation between public authorities and the civil society with the view of mainstreaming equality in strategic planning, service production and working practices in the fields of social welfare and health, education and employment services. A strong emphasis is put on the expertise of NGO`s in equality issues.

The project, which is also co-funded by the Finnish Ministry of Labour, is led by the Provincial State Office of Southern Finland and it is running in six member states: Finland, Sweden, Hungary, Greece, Italy and Spain. The aims of the projects are to empower groups exposed to discrimination (disable, sexual minorities, ethnic and religious groups) so that they are able to influence on non-discrimination policy, and to increase officials´ knowledge on equality issues. Project main activities are establishing expert groups, analysing strategy papers, equality training, empowering NGO´s and reporting and disseminating the results. National findings will be shared between the project countries in transnational conferences. The project has taken different forms in different countries and the activities are shaped by the problems and objectives addressed in each country.

Kukaan ei voi valita ikäänsä, sukupuoltaan, etnistä alkuperäänsä, fyysistä ja psyykkistä toimintavalmiuttaan tai seksuaalista suuntautumistaan. Kaikilla on oikeus omaan uskontoon ja vakaumukseen. Näitä ominaisuuksia käytetään kuitenkin perusteina syrjinnälle ja suvaitsemattomille asenteille.

SEIS III edistää syrjimättömyyttä tiedottamalla ja kouluttamalla. Tavoitteena on lisätä tietoisuutta syrjintäilmiöistä, tuottaa välineitä syrjinnän torjuntaan ja luoda yhteistyöverkostoja.

SEIS III -projekti toteuttaa EU:n syrjinnän vastaista toimintaohjelmaa sekä Hallituksen etnisen syrjinnän ja rasismin vastaista toimintaohjelmaa (ETNORA). Lait ja sopimukset eivät kuitenkaan yksin riitä. Syrjintä on ihmisten aikaansaannos. Suvaitsemattomuutta ei saa suvaita eikä sitä tarvitse sietää.
